Statement of the Minister of National Defence to journalists:

«Mr. Minister of Defence of Cyprus

Ladies and Gentlemen

After taking office as Greece’s Minister of National Defence and accepting the invitation of my counterpart and friend, Mr. Savvas Angelides, I am here today to convey a message of solidarity, support and love to the Republic of Cyprus and to our Cypriot brothers.

Cyprus gives her own struggle. But Greece is always her supporter and backbone in every effort.

Nowadays, the current orientation of the Greek people is towards progress, growth, peace and cooperation among people. In an unstable and turbulent region, Cyprus and Greece are always the focal point of geopolitical developments and they act aligned with each other, as the main actors of security, stability and regional cooperation.

Of course, my first visit abroad could not be anywhere else. My presence here today is both symbolic and essential. It adds one more link to the constant progress of relations between Greece and Cyprus. Our excellent relations of solidarity and fraternity are reinforced as time passes.

In this context, which defined the relations between our two countries and our two Ministries, we will continue in the future. Our objective is to serve peace, security, stability and cooperation in our region through globally accepted principles and international law.

Frequent high-level meetings and visits have already helped to upgrade the level of coordination and synergy between Greece’s and Cyprus’ Armed Forces.

We have completed a significant number of common activities, and we have taken action to implement decisions that will promote this strategic cooperation and improve our effectiveness.

I am absolutely sure that we will keep up the impetus we have reached in the bilateral military cooperation which is the basis for the reinforcement of the fraternal and strategic relation between Greece and Cyprus, as well as for the development of broader regional cooperations.

Thank you”.
