The Minister of National Defence Evangelos Apostolakis is participating in the sessions of the NATO Ministers of Defence Meeting, conducted in Brussels from 13 to 14 February 2019.

The Meeting’s subject units include:

  • The consequences on the European Security Architecture after the activation of the USA withdrawal procedure from the INF (Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty).

  • The staff work’s materialisation progress for the enhancement of NATO defence and deterrence posture.

  • Fair burden sharing in the Alliance.

  • The evolution of NATO operations.

  • The European defence initiatives and the cooperation between NATO and the EU.

During his interventions in the Meeting’s subject units on 13th February, the Minister of National Defence stressed that:

  • The Alliance must enhance the efforts to avoid a new armaments competition in the field of nuclear arms. Consequently it is required to rekindle the dialogue for armaments’ control, disarmament and preventing their dissemination in Europe.

  • The member-states must proportionately contribute to the establishment of high readiness forces in the Alliance, on the basis of their national capabilities. Greece’s participation in the ΝΑΤΟ Readiness Initiative will be examined based on the criterion of Armed Forces’ operational readiness enhancement and their contribution in the materialisation of a common vision for defence and security in Europe.

  • The full operational activation of the “NATO Strategic Direction South Hub’’ will greatly contribute to the accomplishment of its objectives.

  • Greece is fulfilling the obligations arising from its participation in the Alliance.

In the context of the Meeting the Minister of National Defence talked with all his counterparts and he had bilateral contacts with the NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, the Minister of Defence of Turkey Hulusi Akar, the Minister of Defence of North Macedonia Radmila Sekerinska and the Supreme Allied Commander Europe - SACEUR General Curtis M. Scaparrotti.

The Minister of National Defence stated the following:

“- In the context of NATO’s Ministers of Defence Meeting I met with NATO General Secretary with whom we discussed the need for further modernisation and adjustment of the Alliance to the modern security environment. I stressed to Mr Stoltenberg that the enhancement of the Alliance’s response capability in the volatile environment of threats, as well as the increase of readiness of its operational structures, constitute determinative factors in its force projection. Furthermore, I stressed that Greece fulfills the obligation arising from its participation in NATO, actively contributes to the allied interception activity regarding the refugee flows in the Aegean and promotes a wide network of international defence cooperations, enhancing security and stability in the wider region of interest.

- Following on the recent meeting of the Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, I met with my Turkish counterpart Mr Hulusi Akar, with whom we talked about bilateral issues and the implementation of the Papoulias – Yilmaz Memorandum of 1988. Furthermore, we agreed on the scheduling of meetings between the two countries’ delegations, in the immediate future, in order to agree on the framework of Confidence Building Measures.

- I also met with the Minister of Defence of North Macedonia Ms Radmila Sekerinska, with whom we talked about issues pertaining to the implementation of Article 17 of the Prespes Agreement, with a concurrent upgrade of the existing programme of bilateral military cooperation, in the context of this country’s accession to NATO. In that context, I informed her about the supportive capacity of the Hellenic Armed Forces regarding the neighbouring country’s Armed Forces capability building, for its unhindered and swift adjustment for the Alliance, through an upgraded Programme of Military Cooperation”.
