On Wednesday, 23 January 2019, the Minister of National Defence Evangelos Apostolakis went to Chios, where he visited the Hellenic Air Force's SUPER PUMA SAR readiness crews, the Fast Patrol Boat "STAMOU", Hellenic Coast Guard ships ΠΛΣ-171 and Ν/Γ 578, as well as the Headquarters of the 96th Higher National Guard Battalions Command.

Addressing the Armed Forces personnel, the Minister of National Defence stressed, among others:

  • The reliability of the Armed Forces and their readiness to execute their mission to the fullest in order to protect national integrity.

  • The broad spectrum of social contribution actions they engage in.

  • The high morale, professionalism, effectiveness, and eagerness for contribution characterising the personnel.

During his visits to the Armed and Security Forces units, the Minister of National Defence was accompanied by the Chief of Hellenic Army General Staff, Lieutenant General Alkiviadis Stefanis, the Chief of Hellenic Navy General Staff, Vice Admiral Nikolaos Tsounis, and the Chief of the Hellenic Coast Guard, Vice Admiral Stamatios Raptis.

The Minister then went to the Homerion Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Chios, where he attended the unveiling ceremony of a model of Armoured Cruiser "GEORGIOS AVEROF", offered by the "Maria Tsakos" public benefit foundation.

In his address, the Minister of National Defence:

  • thanked the Board of the "Maria Tsakos" foundation for its attention to the maintenance of maritime tradition, as well as to its contribution to the upgrade of maritime education of the youth.

  • congratulated "Maria Tsakos" foundation for its initiative to found the first private Non-Profit Maritime Professional High School in the country, expressing his wish for further such initiatives.

  • stressed the deterrent force of the Armed Forces and the defence cooperations they develop in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Balkans, within the framework of promoting stability in the broader area of national interest.

  • stressed the multifaceted contribution of the Armed Forces to Greek society.

Below is the Minister's address at the Homerion Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Chios:

"I gladly accepted Mr. Tsakos' invitation to the ceremony for the unveiling of the model of Battleship G. Averof. It is a great honour for me to address the citizens of the border island of Chios.

Allow me to express my heartfelt congratulations to Captain Panagiotis and the "Maria Tsakos" Foundation, as well as to the President of the Foundation, Mr. Mitropoulos. Your initiative for the construction and donation of the models to Eastern Aegean islands, as well as the enthusiasm with which the "Maria Tsakos" Foundation embraces the whole venture, shows the importance you lay on maritime tradition and the values of our country, as well as the education of the youth on our glorious maritime history. A history we must safeguard as sacred.

Furthermore, it is with great pleasure that we see the recent creation of the Maritime Professional High School "Tsakos Greek Maritime Studies School" in Chios. Undoubtedly, it will constitute a beacon for the entry of our youth to the great family of Greek seamanship.

At this point, I would like to refer to the close bonds developed between the Armed Forces and Greek society. These bonds became a major advantage, as well as a strong motive and source of inspiration to respond to modern challenges. Hence, the outreach of the Armed Forces consists in a multifaceted contribution to Greek society.

Undoubtedly, the personnel are our driving force, an invaluable force multiplier, following the path of duty, with the same strength and with their heads up.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

following the honour made to me by the Prime Minister, I chose to undertake the political leadership of the Armed Forces because, as a soldier, I have learnt to serve the country and not avoid duty, no matter how difficult. As I have done all these years, I will do so beyond any political ambitions. Besides, times are critical and require unity and national consensus.

Currently, we experience an unstable regional environment, with fragile balances in the near vital geopolitical space. However, I avail myself of the opportunity to assure you that the country's Armed Forces are here, strong, reliable, and ready to execute their mission to the fullest and protect our country's national integrity. The Armed Forces personnel will give their all, flying the flag of deterrence, power, and pride high, to maintain security and peace in our country's area of responsibility.

From my new position, I will do whatever is necessary to ensure the combat readiness of the Armed Forces and to highlight the role of Greece as a pillar of stability and provider of security in the broader region of the East Mediterranean and the Balkans. That's why we have an active defence diplomacy, having undertaken a key role in the promotion of defence synergies and security initiatives in the East Mediterranean and the Balkans.

Dear Captain Panagiotis,

In conclusion, allow me to convey my most heartfelt wishes to you, your family, and your crews, and express my certainty for the success of this important initiative undertaken by the "Maria Tsakos" Foundation.

Thank you".
