The Alternate Minister of National Defence Panagiotis Rigas, following the statement by the Leader of New Democracy before the Parliament on Tuesday, 15 January 2019, stated the following:
The political frenzy, verbosity, and power withdrawal syndrome of the Leader of the opposition, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, led him today to an unacceptable slip and an enormous insult to the Armed Forces before Parliament. In his effort to conceal his extreme adventurism and without any serious evidence, he dared compare the new Minister of National Defence – and, until yesterday, Chief of Hellenic National Defence General Staff – Mr. Evangelos Apostolakis to the dictatorship Minister, General Spantidakis.
Mr. Apostolakis served democracy and the country's Armed Forces for the past 42 years and I am sure that he will continue to do so in his new position. If Mr. Mitsotakis is concerned about democracy, perhaps he should not question the democratic conviction of the Armed Forces and be more concerned about his own party, where various high and low level officials either talk about the legitimisation of the government "due to the Constitution" (perhaps they are bothered by the country's Constitution) or grossly try to involve the President of the Republic in the destabilisation plans of their dreams.
Mr. Evangelos Apostolakis' selection for the position of Minister of National Defence is a safety valve to protect the sovereign rights of the people and the country. Mr. Mitsotakis should show at least some self-restraint and not involve the Armed Forces in his party's interests. Obviously, there is no end to his amoral downgrade and embrace with the far-right wing of his party.
