The main mission of the Armed Forces is the defence of our country's independence and integrity, the safeguarding of our national territory as well as the decisive contribution to the achievement of our country's Policy objectives.

In peacetime, the Armed Forces have the following main objectives:

  • The continuous alertness for the security of our national territory.
  • The maintenance of high operational readiness for the prevention and effective confrontation of dangers and threats, as well as the ensuring of rapid response capability.
  • The contribution to international security and peace.
  • The contribution to activities of social aid and the support of state services for the confrontation of emergency situations.

The Armed Forces of our country are organized and operate under a continuously modernized national security and defense strategy, in order to achieve the objectives of the National Defence Policy. The cornerstone of this strategy consists of the protection of our sovereign rights, the respect towards international borders and conventions, the observance of international law, as well as the peaceable settlement of disputes.

Currently, the Armed Forces of our country are going through a development process, during which some very important and pioneer decisions are being planed and are going to be implemented, which shall lead the AF to a more modern operation level.

The impending review of Law 2292/1995 (FEK A 35) "Organization and operation of the Ministry of National Defence, command and control of the Armed Forces and other clauses" is also moving towards this direction.
