On Sunday, 8 September 2019, the Minister of National Defence, Mr. Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos paid a visit to the Thessaloniki War Museum, accompanied by the Alternate Minister for Citizen Protection, Mr. Giorgos Koumoutsakos and the Deputy Minister of Education, Research and Religious Affairs, Mrs. Sofia Zacharaki.
The Ministers were shown around the personal collection of the New Democracy Member of Parliament, Mr. Kostas Gioulekas, of Thessaloniki A electoral district, which includes relics and documents of the Greek Revolution of 1821, the Macedonian Struggle, the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913, the Asia Minor Campaign, the 1940-1941 Epic and the German Occupation.
Mr. Panagiotopoulos had the opportunity to see, among other things, an order riddled with the bullet that killed Captain Georgios Michalakis, who had written it and carried it on him, the uniforms of Army General Alexandros Papagos, as well as uniforms of other heroes of the 1940 War, like those of Vasos Vrachnos, Nikos Papaioannou, Giorgos Diamantopoulos, Sokratis Dimaratos and others.
Next, the Minister of National Defence watched the live transmission of the Armed Forces programme “With Virtue and Boldness”, transmitted by the public television in the Pavilion 1 of Thessaloniki International Fair.
Mr. Panagiotopoulos congratulated the programme’s contributors for their flawless presentation of the participation of the Ministry of National Defence in the Thessaloniki International Fair, the comprehensive presentation of the Armed Forces operational and social work, as well as the promotion of the message ‘Always Together’. The programme was transmitted live for the first time in history and made a favourable impression both on military personnel and civilians.
The Minister was informed on the conclusions of the informative workshop, under the title ‘Higher Education Institutes-Industry-Defence: synergies and opportunities in a national and European context’, which took place in a room, especially organised in Pavilion 1, he visited the Army’s secondary pavilions once again and was shown around the pavilions of the Chamber of Industry and the Chamber of Arts and Crafts.
