The Minister of National Defence Mr. Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos and the Ambassador of the United States of America Mr. Geoffrey R. Pyatt attended an event organized at the port of Alexandroupolis on the occasion of the project of removal of the sunken dredger “OLGA”.
The event was also attended by the General Secretary of Shipping and Port Infrastructure of the Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy Mr. Evangelos Kyriazopoulos, the Chief of Hellenic Army General Staff Lieutenant General Georgios Kampas, the Commanding General of the 1st Army Lieutenant General Konstantinos Floros, the Commanding General of D’ Army Corps Lieutenant General Haralambos Laloussis and the Commander of the XII Mechanised Infantry Division, Major General Aggelos Houdeloudis.
In his address, the Minister of National Defence underlined that “this is a crucial project which decidedly improves the functionality of the Alexandroupolis port which now acquires an enhanced capability for the anchoring of bigger vessels”, while he highlighted that “it contributes to the improvement of financial activity in Alexandroupolis, as well as in the broader region of Thrace and North Greece”.
Furthermore, the Minister of National Defence referred to the transport infrastructure and the road network of the broader region, dominant to which is the Via Egnatia motorway, underlining that “they form a set of conditions so that the port may become a strategic hub for the rapid transportation of persons and merchandise”. At the same time, he focused on the extremely important energy perspective “with the construction of a vertical natural gas header between Greece and Bulgaria, as well as with the installation of a floating terminal for the regasification of natural gas, at the sea area of Alexandroupolis”. He also pointed out that “through the use of the port from the US Armed Forces, whenever the need arises, our strategic relation with the United States, as well as the cooperation with the Hellenic Armed Forces, are further enhanced, thus contributing to regional stability and security”.
Concluding, the Minister of National Defence put emphasis on the fact that “Greece is a peaceful and democratic country which realizes the challenges, as well as the reshuffling attempted in the greater area. Our wish is to be a pillar of stability and security in the region, enhancing regional cooperation at the basis of International Law and good neighbourly relations which govern civilized nations, ultimately aiming at prosperity and peaceful coexistence of the peoples”; he also stressed that our country “is ready, at any time, to defend and ensure its sovereign rights, as they stem from international treaties and International Law, and from our national rights, naturally to the benefit of every Greek woman and man. This should be heard and, most importantly realised, be everyone”.
Afterwards, the Minister of National Defence visited the HQ of the XII Mechanised Infantry Division “EVROS”, where he was briefed on the activities of the Formation’s Units and Outposts, and later on visited the Surveillance Outposts of Kipoi, Gemisti and Gefira Kipon.
