International Relations Department

The Department of International Relations is the General Directorate sector responsible for the handling of matters of international relations, defence policy and international cooperations of the MoD, within the context of the goals of the National Defence Policy of the country. It cooperates closely with the relevant agencies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or/and of other Ministries and state agencies, the Hellenic National Defence General Staff and the General Staffs of the branches of the Armed Forces. It strives for the best documentation and composition possible of the relevant policies and actions and it formulates opinions and recommendations for the effective support of the national policies.

At the Department of International Relations the following sections – which do not constitute autonomous sections – operate:

1) International Organizations Section: The NATO, Other Organizations, Western-European Union and European Union and Space Policy sub-sections. This section studies, makes policy suggestions and handles matters pertaining to the United Nations, NATO, the European Union and other international Organizations. It plans, programs and coordinates accordingly the relevant actions for the successful achievement of the goals set by the National Defence Policy in coordination with other relevant bodies of the MoD.

2) Bilateral Defence Cooperations Section: For the implementation of the aforementioned responsibilities, the section hosts the Balkan Countries, Mediterranean Dialogue, Middle Eastern Countries, European Countries and Other Countries sub-sections. It plans, programs and coordinates accordingly the relevant actions for the successful achievement of the goals set by the National Defence Policy in coordination with other relevant bodies of the MoD.

3) Protocol Section: Responsible for the planning, excellent preparation and execution of visits – contacts by the General Director and the staff of the Directorate General abroad, as well as of similar visits by their counterparts from other nations, in Greece, in coordination with the other relevant bodies of the MoD or/and of other Ministries.
