The National Strategy is grounded on the following basic principles and objectives:

• The protection of national independence, sovereignty and integrity of our country against any threat.
• The support of our national interests all over the world.
• The support of our country's European course
• The support of our country's role and the maximization of the advantages, deriving from its participation in organizations like the UN, the European Union, NATO and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), which at this time readjust their strategy and practice to the new requirements of the international political scene.
• The reinforcement of our country's position in the Balkans so that it is gradually transformed in a Balkan pillar of the European Union.
• The active presence of Greece among the countries of the Black Sea region and the Eastern Mediterranean.
• The development of an active and dynamic military diplomacy with a view to the promotion of political security, peace and partnership in the Balkans, the Black Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean.
• The development of a multilateral political, financial, cultural and social co-operation in the Balkans and the broader Black Sea region with a view to the preservation of security, peace, as well as the financial and social growth.
• The effective function of our country as a metropolitan center of Hellenism, with the requisite initiatives to arouse Greeks all around the world.

The National Defence Policy is a part of the National Strategy. Its mission is to serve the national interests and national objectives, as they are set by the government and its competent bodies.

Our national defence policy's general objective is to reinforce through combined actions and defence diplomacy our country's security, to stabilize its presence in the international field and establish its constructive role as a motivating power for instigating positive developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, the Balkans and the broader area at large.

The National Defence Policy defines the way of employing our National defence might, as well as the command of general defence matters. It sets also the objectives and priorities, while providing the appropriate directions after taking into consideration inter alia the international environment, our country's international relations and prospects, its present geo-political location, the national power sources, as well as the existent and future threats and risks against the security of Greece.

The basic principles of the National Defence Policy are:

• The peaceful policy of the country.
• The faith in international treaties, agreements and principles of the United Nations Chart and the Helsinki's Final Act according to which Greece:
• Considers that its borders and the exercise of its legal sovereignty rights are irrevocably defined and aims at the respect of the regional status quo, as it arises from the international treaties and agreements, which our country has endorsed.
• Stands firm and uncompromising on issues related to national security and sovereignty.
• Considers that the survival of the Cypriot Hellenism, the support of its beliefs and the guarantee of its safety is our national duty and a vital national interest.
• The dedication to peace, stability and the principles of national security and the active participation and cooperation for their consolidation.
• The peaceful resolution of potential disputes and the countering of threats against the security of our country by using political, diplomatic and financial means.
• The respect of the international obligations, arising from the European Conventional Forces (CFE) Treaty, the Open Skies Treaty and the other relevant treaties.
• The prevention from acquiring and using weapons of mass destruction (nuclear, chemical, biological) and the support of international efforts to contain their proliferation.

The key objectives of the National Defence Policy are:

• The preservation of peace and our country's territorial integrity and the protection of national independence, sovereignty and safety of our people from any external attacks or threats.
• The guarantee of the Cypriot Hellenism's safety and safeguarding of the Greek minorities abroad.
• The assurance of national defence means so that the national sovereignty is established on land, in the air and at the sea.
• The assurance of conducting land, sea and air strategic transportation.
• The stability in the region, the de-escalation of regional conflicts and the establishment of the military balance.
• The promotion of friendly, good neighborhood and cooperation relations, in the zone of our geo-political interest, in Europe, the Adriatic, the Balkans, the Black Sea, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East and North Africa.
• The maximization of the advantages, deriving from our participation in Alliances, collective security agencies and supranational unions (NATO, WEU, OSCE, EU) for the protection of our national interests, respecting at the same time our obligations towards the other parties.
• The contribution to the national economy growth, to boost in particular, the field of domestic defence industry and the implementation of armament and defence research programs.
• The enhancement of the civilians sense of security with the succor of the Hellenic Armed Forces in dealing with large scale plights and emergency situations in general, namely in borderline regions. In addition, it aims at strengthening the unity and the solidarity between the people and the armed forces, through which it promotes the social role and the recognition of the Armed Forces contribution.

The National Military Strategy constitutes a part of our national strategy, which aims at reinforcing the position of Greece in its proximity and on the broader international plane. It derives from the National Defence Policy and intends to define the mission, the major operational tasks of the Armed Forces, the methods of their preparation, deployment and action. Furthermore, it provides special planning guidelines for the requisite forces, so as to ensure the effective prevention and protection of the country against military threats.

The central axis of our military strategy is the prevention of any kind of military threat, combined with the policy of crises de-escalation. Our country's military doctrine is preventive-defensive. It targets every external threat. Our objective is to increase the operational readiness and the capabilities of the Hellenic Armed Forces so as to be able to implement an effective preventive policy, which must be reliable, consistent and persistent and also counter successfully threats of any nature, when necessary
