The Minister of National Defence Mr. NIKOLAOS PANAGIOTOPOULOS participated today, 17 February 2021, in the first day's Meetings of NATO Ministers of Defence, which took place via teleconference.

At the works of the Meeting, the roadmap for the document regarding the understanding on Defence and Deterrence,
the goals of the m-s concerning defence expenditures, as well as the framework for the materialisation of the "NATO 2030" initiative, were primarily discussed.

The Minister of National Defence underlined that Greece is fully in line with the goals set by the Alliance as far as the defence expenditures are concerned, on account of the threats it faces. He also emphasised the importance of the "NATO 2030" initiative, as a means for overcoming the lack of cohesion, and the need to respect the principles upon which the Alliance is based, and the principle of unanimity for NATO decision making.

Moreover, he highlighted our country's full respect to the fundamental rule of the NATO Treaty and the UN Charter, to peacefully settle any difference, based on international law, as well as to avoid provocative activity that contradicts the Alliance's principles.

In addition, he referred to the need to strengthen EU and NATO cooperation in more fields; naturally, this needs a deep change of mentality, so as to overcome the existing obstacles regarding the inclusion of all members of both organisations to this cooperation, but also the respect of their autonomy in decision-making, their institutional independence and their different procedures.

Mr. Panagiotopoulos also accentuated the importance of EU-NATO cooperation for the further enhancement of the transatlantic bond, the dynamic injected in this cooperation by the new US Government, as well as the need formutual understanding of the threats faced by the Member-States.
