On the occasion of the 199th Anniversary of the War for the National Regeneration, on the day of the feast of the Annunciation of the Theotokos, the Minister of National Defence, Mr. Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos, made the following address:
“Today, we celebrate and honour the anniversary of the National Regeneration, on the day of the great Religious Feast of the Annunciation of the Theotokos.
This year the situation is different, but the meaning remains the same.
We are called on to derive inspiration and strength from the example of the 1821 heroes, in order to face the critical threats of our time, the hard ordeals of our historic juncture.
So that the future historian can write some day that in March 2020, 199 years since March 1821, the Greeks were united, fought and succeeded.
First, they fought to ensure that the borders would not be violated, against a massive and organised invasion attempt, and then to limit the uncontrolled dispersion of a lethal virus in the interior of the country, which brought the whole world to the end of its endurance. So, we proceed with a sense of personal liability and solidarity towards our fellow-men; with faith, strength and decisiveness; with our heads high and our flag flying!
Let us recall those who fought, so that Greece can become a free and independent state. Let us be worthy of them, writing our own history.
Many happy returns to the Armed Forces!
Many happy returns to Greece!
Long live the Nation!”.
