The Minister of National Defence Panos Kammenos, accompanied by the Chief of HNDGS Admiral Evangelos Apostolakis, attended the celebration, held in Nicosia, for the 58th anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Cyprus as representative of the government.

After the end of the military parade, the Minister of National Defence made the following statement:

Congratulations to Cyprus. One more year, I had the honour to stand on the right of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, and celebrate together with him the anniversary of Cyprus’ Independence. But we will really celebrate when Cyprus is liberated; the entire territory of Cyprus, united, up to Apostolos Andreas.

Greece is here, standing by Cyprus. Greece does not consider that Cyprus is far. I would like to stress that, thanks to the hard sacrifices of Greek Cypriots and Greeks, our two countries are no longer in crisis, but they are countries of stability in the wider area of the Mediterranean Sea.

The hard work of the Armed Forces of Cyprus and Greece, the National Guard and the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, the two Ministries and the Governments have led to bilateral and trilateral agreements which upgrade the role of Greece and Cyprus to pillars of stability. A new energy centre in the Mediterranean Sea is now developed based on our two countries.

We will continue to struggle until Cyprus is totally free, but Greek Cypriots should feel safe and have only one prerequisite: unity and concord of the entire people.

Happy Independence Day.”
