The Minister of National Defence Panos Kammenos, accompanied by the Chief of Hellenic National Defence General Staff Admiral Evangelos Apostolakis HN, attended the oath-taking ceremony of the new Associate Judges of the Judiciary Corps.

The Minister of National Defence addressed the following:

It is with great pleasure that we are here today, on the occasion of the oath-taking ceremony of the new Associate Judges of the Judiciary Corps, who will officially join the family of the Armed Forces.

Young Associate Judges, men and women, of the Military Justice,

This day is special. A while ago, you took the oath, by which you undertook the national obligation to serve an institution, which is fundamental for the consolidation of discipline and the assurance of legitimacy in the Armed Forces.

You are invited to do so, equipped with guarantees of functional and personal independence, so that you can be the guardians of law enforcement rules, under a state of absolute respect regarding personal rights and fundamental freedoms of the army officers brought to trial.

The current leadership of the Ministry of National Defence not only supports the necessity of military justice, but also the need to armour and upgrade its institutional role, regarding the sensitive field of the Armed Forces.

We have proved and verified this approach in practice, not only through the reinforcement of its logistical infrastructures and the conduct of the recent competition in relation to your hiring, but also through the upcoming presentation of a bill to the Parliament, which will hopefully solve unsettled problems regarding military justice. All these will be achieved in cooperation with the leadership of the military justice and the judges.

I am committed to express my belief in practice, regarding the necessity and the institutional upgrading of the military justice and its essential role with regard to the function of the Armed Forces, in the upcoming constitutional amendment.

We will await your points of view and proposals, in order to make the necessary changes in the oncoming constitutional amendment, on behalf of the Ministry of National Defence and the Government.

I would like to thank at this point, the Chairman of the Court of Appeal and Director of the Military Justice Directorate, for his constant effort to both apply a quick and more effective justice and to upgrade the total role and work of the Judiciary Corps.

Young Associate Judges, men and women, of the Military Justice,

this day marks the completion of a difficult competition procedure, a result of which is that you are joining the Corps of Military Justice.

You are excellent. We will give you the opportunity to get to know the Armed Forces, all the specialties and all the Arms, by visiting all units of the country. You should know who you bring to trial and the nature of their work.

Concluding, I invite you to execute your duties with the necessary neutrality, conscientiousness, high sense of responsibility, poise, determination and boldness, if required. Justice is under severe pressure. You must resist, constantly justifying our trust towards the Military Justice.

I am certain that you will fully satisfy the rightful claims and the just expectations of the Armed Forces’ members and of our society as well, maintaining the high level of the Corps of the Military Justice.

I wish you and your families, good health and to have a smooth and creative term of service and be certain that the military and political leadership of the Ministry of National Defence is constantly by your side.

Be strong”.
