The Minister of National Defence Panos Kammenos, accompanied by the Chief of Hellenic National Defence General Staff Admiral Evangelos Apostolakis HN and the Chief of Hellenic Navy General Staff Vice Admiral Nikolaos Tsounis HN, attended the oath-taking ceremony of newly recruited seamen of 2018 D Enlistment Series, which took place at ‘Kanellopoulos’ Naval Base at Skaramangas Naval Fort.
The Minister of National Defence addressed the following:
“It is with great pleasure that we are here today, on the occasion of the oath-taking ceremony of 2018 D Enlistment Series newly enlisted seamen, who will officially join the glorious family of the Hellenic Navy.
This day is special. A while ago, wearing the honourable uniform of the Greek Seaman, you took the oath, by which you undertook the national obligation to protect the country. At the same time, you made the promise you owed to all those who fought, sacrificing even their own lives for freedom, one of the Country’s noble ideals.
I am confident that you are ready to execute the mission assigned to you flawlessly, assuring national independence and territorial integrity for all Greeks. Your enlistment as a constitutional mandate and a diachronic duty of the active Greek citizens is a great honour and responsibility.
You are joining the Hellenic Navy’s family and the Armed Forces’ bigger family, which unite all Greeks; they are the reference point of the whole Nation, a sector of peace, solidarity and National Cohesion.
Both the political and military leadership of the Ministry of National Defence firmly believe that the manpower is the core and the most important force multiplier of our Armed Forces and we pay special attention to your training. During your term of service, you will have the opportunity to realize that even the most modern weapon systems, first and foremost, need properly trained personnel. So, I am asking you to obey and follow your superiors’ orders by showing maturity, responsibility and interest.
Your term of service is not only a creative phase in your life, during which you actively contribute to the defence and protection of the country, but a period during which the acquisition of new knowledge and experiences will contribute to your future integration in the society and in the hard professional arena. I am confident that in your future life as civilians, you will recall with nostalgia and pride moments of your term of service, as we all do.
Dear parents, during my four year tenure, I have attended more than seventy Armed Forces recruits’ oath-taking ceremonies. But today, apart from my capacity as Minister of National Defence, I am here as a parent as well. As a parent, I am, just like you, extremely touched, honoured and proud, and for this, I invite you to stand by your children, who will devote a small, but very important part of their lives to serve the Country, a principle, which is the utmost duty of every citizen of this country, as I have stated before.
Ladies and gentlemen,
The geographical position of our country, surrounded by sea, with thousands of islands, rocks and islets, defined our historical fate as a nation across centuries.
The great importance of the power of sea for the security and survival of our nation, familiarized the Greeks with the sea and distinguished them as the most capable seamen of the world. Our Navy’s great tradition makes us all certain of our Country’s future, because Greece and the sea are two interrelated concepts.
Our seamen, together with the Navy’s members, everyday send a message to everybody: that we protect the ancient and holy spirit of the Country with determination, boldness and composure.
We are living in a time period of new, big, daily challenges. But we remain deeply dedicated to the great values of our Nation, the value of freedom, of democracy, of national sovereignty, and we will passionately continue to serve these values.
Such determination is apparent both in every exercise conducted and in every challenge faced by our Navy’s ships. It is this high level of readiness of our Armed Forces members and draftees that makes us all proud.
Concluding, I invite you to execute your duties with high morale and dedication to the eternal values of the Nation and to justify our people’s trust towards the Armed Forces.
I wish to you and your families, good health and prosperity and that Saint Nikolas protects and helps you. Have a smooth and creative term of service and be certain that the leadership of the Ministry of National Defence and the Navy are constantly by your side.”
