On Wednesday, 14 October 2020, the annual Defence Ministers Conference of South Eastern Europe Countries (South Eastern Europe Ministerial-SEDM) took place through video teleconference (VTC). The Deputy Minister of National Defence Mr. Alkiviadis Stefanis represented our country.
Greece was responsible for conducting the Conference as Host Nation in Athens, but the Conference did not take place due to the medical crisis. The Greek Commander of the Multinational South Eastern Europe Brigade (SEEBRIG), Brigadier General Mr. Aristeidis Iliopoulos, also participated in the video teleconference.
The Conference’s main lines of action referred to the general security situation in the region of South Eastern Europe, SEDM’s role regarding the preservation of stability and peace in the region, the annual review, as well as to the scheduling of SEEBRIG’s activities for the next year.
During his interventions, the Deputy Minister of National Defence referred to developments in the wider region of South Eastern Europe and Eastern Mediterranean, as well as to the evolving threats regarding peace and security in the region. Additionally, he pointed out the need to respect the International Law fundamental principles and rules, the sovereignty, the territorial integrity and the States’ sovereign rights.
The Deputy Minister of National Defence pointed out the need of further developing regional cooperations, in order to shape a stability climate and good neighborly relations, through the exchange of ideas and the development of defence programs of mutual interest.
