On Thursday, 14 May 2020 and Friday, 15 May 2020, the Deputy Minister of National Defence Alkiviadis Stefanis visited the islands of Limnos, Aghios Efstratios, Lesvos and Chios, in order to inspect the surveillance and security assets and procedures of the sea borders, in the context of the Uniform Borders Surveillance Body, as well as the reinforcement of the effectiveness of the ‘inter-service deterrence operations’.
The Deputy Minister of National Defence started his series of visits from Limnos. He successively visited the 130 Combat Group and the 88 Military Command headquarters and had meetings with the Formations’ Commanders, as well as with the Port Commander and the Navy’s Detachment Commander of the island. Then, he visited ‘PLAKAS’ and ‘FISINIS’ Surveillance Outposts.
Afterwards, he went to Aghios Efstratios island and visited ‘AGHIOS EFSTRATIOS’ Surveillance Outpost. In the context of his visit, the Deputy Minister of National Defence met with Mrs. Maria Kakali, the Mayor of Aghios Efstratios, and delivered medical and pharmaceutical supplies (protective masks and antiseptics) manufactured by the Armed Forces. Next, he visited the Democracy Museum and after that, he visited First Lieutenant’s Nikolaos Salmas memorial, who fell in action on the 18th of June 1992 and laid a wreath.
In the afternoon he departed for Lesvos. First, he visited Mithimnas Port Station, where he delivered a brief address to the personnel of the PORT POLICE CORPS-THE HELLENIC COAST GUARD, who were on duty. Next, he went to ‘KAMENO DASOS’ region, where he laid a wreath to Second Lieutenant’s Spyridon Papaditsas memorial, who fell in action on the 7th of March 1990. He then visited the 98 HIGHER NATIONAL GUARD BATTALIONS COMMAND headquarters and had a meeting with the Formation’s Commander, who was accompanied by the local Police and Port Authorities. In the evening, the Deputy Minister of National Defence participated in a night operational navigation on a PORT POLICE CORPS-HELLENIC COAST GUARD floating vessel.
On Friday, 15 May 2020, the Deputy Minister of National Defence visited the Aghios Rafail Monastery. Following this, he departed for Chios and visited the 96 HIGHER NATIONAL GUARD BATTALIONS COMMAND headquarters, where he had a meeting with the Formation’s Commander, who was accompanied by the Police and Port Authorities of the island. He also visited the Central Port Authority of Chios and delivered medical and pharmaceutical supplies (protective masks and antiseptics) for the protection of floating vessels crews. Finally, he participated in a day operational navigation on a PORT POLICE CORPS-HELLENIC COAST GUARD floating vessel.
Concluding his visits’ program, the Deputy Minister of National Defence expressed his satisfaction regarding the level of operational readiness, capability and effectiveness of both the Armed Forces and the PORT POLICE CORPS-HELLENIC COAST GUARD and specified the planning and organization guidelines, in the context of dealing with future challenges.
