The Minister of National Defence Mr. Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos attended the doxology today at the Athens Cathedral, on the occasion of the Armed Forces Day celebration, also attended by the President of the Hellenic Republic Mr. Prokopios Pavlopoulos. Next, he laid a wreath at the Unknown Soldier Tomb, representing the Government and the Prime Minister Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The festivities were also attended by the President of the Hellenic Parliament Mr. Konstantinos Tasoulas, the Deputy Minister of National Defence Mr. Alkiviadis Stefanis, the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff General (HAF) Christos Christodoulou, the Chief of the Hellenic Army General Staff Lieutenant General Georgios Kampas, the Chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff Vice Admiral Nikolaos Tsounis HN, the Chief of the Hellenic Air Force General Staff Lieutenant General (HAF) Georgios Blioumis, representatives of the political parties, general and senior officers of the Armed and Security Forces, representatives of the Attica Region and Athens Municipality, former Chiefs and Deputy Chiefs of the Armed Forces, retired Armed Forces Officers, as well as foreign Embassies’ Attachés.

Following the doxology, the Minister of National Defence stated:

Today, on the day of the big Orthodoxy celebration, that is the Presentation of Virgin Mary, we also celebrate and honor our Armed Forces, the forces that the Defender General led to victories through the centuries, which finally resulted in the dominance of our national rights, the protection of our sovereign rights, the safeguarding of our freedom and our national independence.

I wish from the bottom of my heart that our Armed Forces, the men and women, the Armed Forces members, are covered and protected by the Virgin’s Grace. The current geopolitical conditions and instabilities and the security challenges that mainly emerge in our wider region, impose the need for Greece to possess powerful and well-trained Armed Forces with a deterrent power. This is also our mission as Political Leaders of the Ministry of National Defence.

In any case, what stands is that Greece possesses this kind of Armed Forces, both regarding weapon systems and mostly personnel quality, so that it possesses its own force multiplier and discourages any scheming by anyone against our sovereign rights.

Happy Armed Forces Day and may the Virgin’s Grace guide and protect them”.
