On Wednesday, 17 April 2019, the Minister of National Defence Evangelos Apostolakis, accompanied by the Chief of Hellenic National Defence General Staff, General (HAF) Christos Christodoulou, the Chief of Hellenic Navy General Staff, Vice Admiral Nikolaos Tsounis HN, the Chief of Hellenic Air Force General Staff, Lieutenant General (HAF) Georgios Blioumis, and the Chief of Staff of the Hellenic Army General Staff, Lieutenant General Konstantinos Masouras, who represented the Chief HAGS, attended activities during the Distinguished Visitors' Day (DV Day) of joint exercise "MEDUSA 8" in Egypt.
The objective of the exercise, which includes forces from Cyprus and is attended by observers from 6 countries (Bulgaria, France, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Romania, Saudi Arabia), is the further enhancement of military cooperation among the participating countries.
DV Day activities took place in the sea area of Alexandria and included an amphibious action demonstration, close air support and attack helicopter operations, parachutist drops, and surface fires.
DV Day activities were also attended by the Defence Ministers of Egypt, General Mohamed Zaki, and Cyprus, Savvas Angelides.
During the DV Day, the Minister of National Defence had bilateral meetings with both his Egyptian and Cypriot counterparts. More specifically, during his meeting with General Mohamed Zaki, he stressed the requirement to promote international defence cooperations and initiatives in order to effectively deal with the challenges and threats of the modern security environment in the broader area of common interest.
It was also noted that the bilateral defence cooperation is constantly improving, as confirmed by the systematic implementation of exercise "MEDUSA" during the past three years. At the same time, the further enhancement of this cooperation was examined in the areas of operational and individual training, Special Forces, exchange of information, and defence industry.
