The Minister of National Defence Evangelos Apostolakis attended the Hellenic Navy’s event “Great is the Might of the Sea” on Sunday 9 June 2019, in Ermoupoli on the island of Syros, where he laid a wreath at the Konstantinos Kanaris Monument.
The Chief of HNDGS General Christos Christodoulou, the Chief of HNGS Vice Admiral Nikolaos Tsounis, the Chief of HAFGS Lieutenant General Georgios Blioumis and the Chief of the Hellenic Port Authority–Coastguard, Vice Admiral Stamatios Raptis also attended the event.
The address of the Minister of National Defence can be read below:
“Today we are on Syros along with the Chief of HNDGS and the Chiefs of HNGS and HAFGS, in the context of the Hellenic Navy’s events which precede the “Kataigis” exercise and we celebrate what we have named “Great is the Might of the Sea”, during which all of the Hellenic Navy’s ships participating in the exercise, have been distributed to all the ports of the Eastern Aegean, commencing an exercise with a major presence by the Navy and the crews at the various ports.
We once more establish the combativeness of the Hellenic Navy, how important it is for Greeks to have a navy capable of covering all of the Aegean and increasing the sense of security and peace in the region.
As we have stated before, it is a constant effort to preserve our composure and manage to diffuse tensions in a region which is frequently tense.
I wish the crews a successful exercise, safe sails and successful completion of their missions”.
