The Minister of National Defence Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos, the Chief of HNDGS General Christos Christodoulou, the Chief of HAGS Lieutenant General Georgios Kambas, the Chief of HNGS Vice Admiral Nikolaos Tsounis, the Chief of HAFGS Lieutenant General Georgios Blioumis and the Secretary General of the Ministry of National Defence Antonios Ikonomou attended the parade for the National Anniversary of the 28th October, which took place in Thessaloniki.
The president of the Hellenic Republic Prokopios Pavlopoulos, the Minister of Defence of Cyprus Savvas Aggelidis, the Chief of the National Guard General Staff Lieutenant General Ilias Leontaris, political parties’ representatives, MPs and members of the Local Self-government also attended the parade.
After the end of the parade the Minister of National Defence Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos addressed those present:
“Today, from Thessaloniki, which shined because of the celebratory decorations, we celebrated the Anniversary of the 28th October 1940, the Epic of 1940 - 1941. We paid homage to the heroes who struggled, fought, died, sacrificed themselves, defending the Homeland, in a time when the National morale, the firm leadership, the military readiness overcame and defeated the superior fire-power, the strength in numbers, the aggressiveness and arrogance of a totalitarian regime.
So today, we honour the memory of these Heroes. We observed an exquisite parade, where we saw and admired the members of the cultural clubs, the rescue teams and the classes of students parading proud and standing straight with awareness. We also admired the parading Armed Forces detachments from all three Services. The sense of pride and emotions for their morale, their stoutness, but also for the modern weapon systems demonstrated during the parade, truly affected this great crowd which flocked at the seaside avenue, so as to admire them.
The received message is that the Hellenic Armed Forces are strong, battle-worthy and operational. They have deterrent force and that is clear to anyone and acknowledged by everyone.
This blessed and beautiful land has been coveted by many through the centuries. Whenever our people had national awareness, whenever they stood side by side, united and decided, they always scored great victories. Whenever they were divided, they suffered great national retreats. Consequently, let us be taught by the paradigm of the heroes of ΄40. Let us develop our national morale, let us support the mighty Armed Forces, to successfully face any evildoing, which may be different than those times, but have no doubt that it still exists to this day.
The mighty Armed Forces constitute the basic element of our country’s deterrent force, so we honour those who fell defending our Homeland. We never forget their paradigm. We are trying to emulate their feat and stay vigilant with all our forces, so that no evildoer, from the current or future ones, will manage to pass through our land. No-one will ever pass through our land.
God bless Thessaloniki.
God bless Macedonia.
God bless Greece”.
The Minister of Defence of Cyprus Savvas Aggelidis also addressed those attending the parade:
“I would like to express my most sincere congratulations to all the participants of this exceptional parade, who have achieved their goal, who have substantially boosted the morale of the members of the Armed Forces, but also the morale of the entire Greek Nation.
The parade is the minimum contribution to the ones who gave their lives, while fighting for freedom. With their heroic deeds and their heroic decisions, with the great “NO” of 1940, they are giving us lessons which we, as the Political Leadership, will have to evaluate and use as the base for our decisions, in order to learn from the mistakes of the past.
I would like to assure you that through the exquisite cooperation of the Greek and Cypriot Governments, we are sending a substantial message of unity. Be certain that we can achieve a lot, if we stand united. Furthermore, I would like to communicate the Cypriot people’s appreciation of the Greek people, the people of Greece, for the constant contribution to the daily fight for the securing of our sovereignty, our sovereign rights and for peace in the region.
Thank you very much.
God bless you all”.
