The official visit of the Minister of National Defence Mr. Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos, who attended the commemorative events in honour of the Officers and soldiers who lost their lives during the 1974 Turkish invasion was completed.
Mr. Panagiotopoulos attended the memorial service held at the Makedonitissa Tomb, in the presence of the President of the Republic, the President of the House of Representatives Mr. Dimitrios Syllouris, and then he visited the Holy Temple of Panagia Faneromeni where the Memorial Service in honour of the Fallen Heroes was held.
In his address, the Minister of National Defence stated the following:
“We have come here today, the Political and Military Leadership, to pay tribute to the hero Officers, NCOs, Soldiers, Cypriots and Greeks, who fell in action fighting for the freedom of Cyprus, defending the Cypriot territory during the Attila invasion in 1974.
Today we are not celebrating, we simply remember and mourn. Someone said that ‘the tree of freedom is only watered with the blood of heroes’, here it was watered with the blood of many heroes. We bow our knee. We remember them and we pay tribute to all of them”.
Then, Mr.Panagiotopoulos visited the Ministry of National Defence where he had a private meeting with his Cypriot counterpart Mr. Charalambos Petridis, and the two Ministers had talks also attended by HNDGS Chief General Konstantinos Floros and the Chief of the National Guard General Staff Lieutenant General Dimokritos Zervakis and by delegations of both countries.
The Minister completed his visit on Hellenic Navy frigate “KANARIS” docked at the port of Limassol. He was accompanied by HNDGS/Chief, NGGS/Chief and Mr. Dimitrios Kairidis, Member of the Hellenic Parliament and representing it, who attended the commemorative events in honour of the fallen Officers and Soldiers during the 1974 Turkish invasion.
