Today in the afternoon the Minister of National Defence Mr. Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos held a phone call with the US Secretary of Defence Dr. Mark Thomas Esper, scheduled following the temporary postponement of the Minister’s visit to Washington DC.
Initially the Minister briefed his US counterpart on the current developments in the region south and east of Kastelorizo, where Turkey announced that it intends to conduct researches in an area which includes the Greek continental shelf. Mr Panagiotopoulos presented the developments underway, with the movement of Navy Units in the region and highlighted the fact that our country is determined to defend its sovereign rights if required.
Apart from exchanging views on the developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, they discussed the new perspectives and opportunities presented by the signing of the Mutual Defence Cooperation Agreement by the two countries, to further deepen the strategic cooperation in the defence and defence-technical field.
More specifically, the importance of the bilateral cooperation on security and stability in the wider region was confirmed, as well as the contribution of Greece as a stalwart NATO ally and a pillar of stability in the wider region.
The two ministers also discussed matters pertaining to armament programs, while additionally they underlined their intention to further develop cooperations in the defence-technical field, which would mutually benefit both countries.
Moreover, the Minister of National Defence made a mention of our country’s initiatives to develop trilateral groups of defence regional cooperation with East Mediterranean countries aiming at the security, the stability and the prosperity of the countries in the region.
