The Minister of National Defence, Mr. Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos had a meeting today with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Nikos Dendias. The Deputy Minister of National Defence, Mr. Alkiviadis Stefanis, also attended the meeting.

During the meeting, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed, between the Ministry of National Defence and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The memorandum specifies the cooperation of the two Ministries, with regard to issues concerning Defence Diplomacy, National Defence, as well as International Relations issues of defence interest.

The setting up of the independent Defence Diplomacy Office is also provided for, in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which will be staffed with Military Personnel of the Armed Forces’ Three Services, as well as Diplomatic Personnel of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and will be directly subject to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Upon conclusion of the meeting, the Minister of National Defence, Mr. Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos, stated the following:

We had the pleasure of welcoming in the Ministry of National Defence, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and also a good friend, Mr. Nikos Dendias, so as to strengthen the bonds between the two Ministries, with regard to cooperation and the level of cooperation, as they constitute the key pillars of shaping and implementing the country’s Foreign Policy: the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on one hand, through international and bilateral relations, and the Ministry of National Defence on the other, through Defence Diplomacy, a sector of strategic importance.

Therefore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of National Defence come closer and develop a tight and intensive cooperation framework, through the establishment of the Defence Diplomacy Office in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which will be staffed with Armed Forces Officers.

All of the above take place so that we shall achieve a better and more intensive coordination of the two Ministries’ actions, so that we can have a more effective, in all forms, implementation of the country’s Foreign Policy”.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Nikos Dendias, stated the following:

It is a great pleasure and honour to be here today as a guest of Minister Mr. Nikos Panagiotopoulos and his associates, in the Ministry of National Defence.

We came in the Ministry of National Defence to sign a close cooperation memorandum, so that we can achieve the absolute synchronisation of the two Ministries’ actions and views. This synchronisation will be compatible with the broader Doctrine of our country, which is an EU member-state, a country which always wishes to be in the core of Europe, but also a country which wishes to have excellent relations with all its neighbours and be a pillar of stability and security in the region.

We do not forget though that our country, which is traditionally a peaceful country, can also defend itself. So, we are here today, at the heart of defence, to honour this Ministry and make a step further to a closer cooperation”.
