The Minister of National Defence Mr Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos honoured the 28th October 1940 National Anniversary at the Crete Naval Base, escorting the Prime Minister Mr Kyriakos Mitsotakis who was given a tour of the “KATSONIS” submarine, which is anchored in the area.
After the completion of the Prime Minister’s visit and of the briefing which was conducted by the crew of the submarine, the Minister of National Defence proceeded to make the following statement regarding the National Anniversary:
“Today we are celebrating the heroic anniversary of “NO”. On the 28th October 1940, Greece stood its ground against an arrogant invader.
The enemy had the numerical superiority and was better equipped, however, during the events that followed, the Hellenic Army crushed the enemy and achieved a resounding military victory, a triumph. And this happened because the Hellenic Armed Forces stood ready to defend the country’s territorial integrity and enjoyed the absolute trust of the united, determined and self-aware Greek people.
The Epic of 1940 shows the way. Today we are called to embrace the view that powerful and deterrent Armed Forces, as well as a united and determined people, are the necessary conditions so that we can ward off any scheming, any threat, any challenge against our national sovereignty.
From the Crete Naval Base, before the state of the art “KATSONIS” submarine, I would like to assure the Greek people that the Armed Forces are in a position to defend the country’s territorial integrity against any scheming, by any arrogant plotter. They have proven it and they keep proving it every day.
Many happy returns!
All hail the 28th October!”
