The Minister of National Defence Mr. Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos represented Greece at the military parade for the 59th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Cyprus.
After the parade, the Minister made the following statement:
"It is with great joy and emotion that I am here today, in sunny and warm Nicosia, to attend the glorious celebration for the 59th anniversary of the Independence of Cyprus and pay once again my respects to the place where a heavy toll was paid in blood.
My presence here sends a message of total support of Greece to Cyprus.
We watched with great emotion and pride as Cypriot National Guard troops and forces of the Cypriot Security Forces, together of course with the Hellenic Contingent in Cyprus, paraded confidently and proudly with their modern weapon systems. We felt that the deterrent force of the Armed Forces of Greece and Cyprus is always strong.
On behalf of the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Hellenic Government, and the entire Greek people, I would like to say to our Cypriot brothers that Greece stands beside Cyprus.
We fight for a common vision for a united, independent, sovereign Republic of Cyprus, free and proud, without occupation troops, in accordance with and supported by International Law and UN resolutions, not illegal and barbarous behaviour.
We are together in this fight, from Ormenio in Thrace to Gavdos in the Sea of Crete and from Othoni in the Ionian Sea to the ghost town, the martyred Famagusta in Cyprus. A pillar of support, solidarity, togetherness, and fraternity emerges. Happy Independence Day to Cyprus!
Today, Greece felt proud of you. Today, I felt proud of you!
Happy Independence Day and we move forward for our common dream, our common vision. Congratulations again to all contributors of this excellent parade.
Dear friend, Defence Minister of Cyprus, General, congratulations to you all. Today, we felt proud of you once again".
