Address of the Minister of National Defence Evangelos Apostolakis during his visit to Armed Forces Formations in Larissa
“Today I am here in Larissa with the Chief of HNDGS, the Chief of HAGS and the Commander of the 1st Army, in a series of visits and briefings we are conducting, after the assumption of the Minister’s duties, to once more conclude the battle-worthiness of the Armed Forces and the 1st Army in particular, which has undertaken an essential role and executes it in the best possible way. The personnel stands in superb condition, the weapon systems and support are at a good level. So we once more conclude that the morale is high along with their capability to execute their mission in the best possible way”.
Journalist’s Question: Do you have any comments about the Brigade in Volos? How about the “Bougas” Camp located nearby?
E. APOSTOLAKIS: We will go through with the operational planning as scheduled. We are trying to find the best possible way and time. Everything will move forward as planned.
Journalist’s Question: Has that anything to do with the elections?
E. APOSTOLAKIS: It has nothing to do with the elections, it has to do with our own planning for preparation, to coordinate everything in the appropriate time and manner.
Journalist’s Question: Does the planning include further arrangements with allied countries, like USA? There are many news reports regarding the role of the 110 Battle Wing.
E. APOSTOLAKIS: Our cooperation with the allies and the USA in particular are outstanding. We are trying to utilise every provided capability in order to enhance our operational potential, in cooperation, whenever possible and necessary, with other countries’ Armed Forces.
Journalist’s Question: Minister, will the 110 Battle Wing become the base of the Global Hawk UAVs in the future?
E. APOSTOLAKIS: We are looking into every possible angle. Various requests have been submitted which are currently under discussion and examination. We have not made any final decisions yet.
Journalist’s Question: Minister, on the day before yesterday, the Chief of HAGS was harshly criticised by the ex Minister of National Defence Panos Kammenos. Does Mr Kambas have your support?
E. APOSTOLAKIS: Of course he does and I have stated, as I believe you have heard, that the Chiefs of the Armed Forces are institutions. They have been chosen because they are the best and they cannot be criticised during their term of service, but instead they should be given time to prove their capabilities through the results of their efforts.
