The Minister of National Defence Evangelos Apostolakis visited the Pentagon in Washington, on Friday 7 June 2019, where after the official reception ceremony, he met with the acting US Secretary of Defence Patrick Shanahan.
During the meeting the two Ministers discussed the modern security environment, giving emphasis to the Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East and North Africa.
At the same time, the exceptional defence cooperation between Greece and the USA was analysed, the level of which can be concluded from the numerous joint activities conducted recently but also from the two countries’ strategic dialogue which took place for the first time in December 2018.
The Minister of National Defence promoted the national positions and mentioned the initiatives of the international defence diplomacy materialised by Greece, in the context of peace and stability enhancement in the wider region. He also stressed Turkey’s violating stance in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, emphasising the efforts made to widen activities/actions, within the context of Confidence Building Measures, aiming to prevent and avoid points of tension during the conduct of military activities.
During his visits and contacts in Washington, the Minister was accompanied by the Ambassador of Greece in the USA Mr Charis Lalakos, while he visited the Embassy of Greece and met with the Hellenic Armed Forces personnel, serving in the wider region.
