On Friday, 12 April 2019, the Minister of National Defence Evangelos Apostolakis, in the context of his visit in Crete, visited Sitia region, which was recently hit by severe weather conditions.
The Minister was informed by the Mayor Theodoros Paterakis on the magnitude of the damages, in order to consider a possible contribution of the Armed Forces for their restoration.
Upon conclusion of the visit, the Minister stated the following:
“In the context of our visit today in Crete, we started from Chania, where we signed a cooperation memorandum with Chania Municipality, regarding a camp, which we decided to utilise, and afterwards, we did the same thing at Heraklion. At the same time, we also observed the works’ progress at Chania, the restoration of damages caused by the recent rainfalls and floods. Of course, we could not leave without visiting Sitia. So, we continued our trip. The Mayor, here, as well as the engineer of Sitia Municipality, informed us on the problems they face. We have some information, not in details of course, but we can conclude on how we can help the Municipality. An engineer group will visit the region and it will cooperate with the Municipality. We will try, at least as far as serious problems which affect the operability are concerned, to conduct preliminary designs, so that there is a suggestion on our part, on how to proceed with the repairs. This will be implemented very quickly and from then on, we will cooperate with the Municipal and Regional authorities, and whenever we can offer our help, we will do so.
What was apparent from these damages, reactions and actions, was that when agencies cooperate and react quickly and with coordination, the results are very good. We hope this will never happen again, but the lesson learned is that when we are all together, we can face a lot of situations.
Thank you very much.”
