The Minister of National Defence Panos Kammenos met with the Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation, Sergei Shoigu, within the framework of his official visit to Moscow.
After the meeting, the Minister of National Defence made the following statement:
"It was a great pleasure to meet the Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation, Mr. Sergei Shoigu. We had the opportunity to exchange views on our bilateral relations, as well as on matters regarding security in the broader region of the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and the Balkans.
Greece and Russia have always had excellent relations with regard to defence and diplomacy. This year marks the 190th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations. This means that the two peoples, regardless of the international environment, can communicate and cooperate, to the benefit of peace, democracy, and to the benefit of the peoples of Russia and Greece.
We share common values, in particular through the Orthodox faith. Together, we can help resolve the problems plaguing the broader Balkans region.
We agreed that we will work in the following period so that the visit of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on 7 December and the Inter-ministerial Committee meeting will usher in a new era for Greek – Russian relations.
Regarding the military bilateral relations, within the framework allowed by the international treaties, we continue to support the Russian systems used by the Hellenic Armed Forces and cooperate in the fields of training, exchange of information, countering terrorism, and ensuring peaceful conditions in our region".
Earlier, the Minister of National Defence Panos Kammenos laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Kremlin.
