On Wednesday 26 February 2025, the Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias attended the inauguration ceremony of the Officers residential complex at “KARAISKAKIS B” Camp in Chaidari. A consecration ceremony was carried out at the inauguration officiated by the Reverend Metropolitan of Nikaia Alexios.
The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Minister of National Defence Giannis Kefalogiannis, the MP Dimitris Kalogeropoulos, Chief/HNDGS General Dimitrios Choupis, Chief/HAGS Lieutenant General Georgios Kostidis, representatives of the Chiefs of HNGS and HAFGS. It was also attended by the Mayor of Chaidari Michalis Selekos, the Commanding General of the Higher Army Support Military Command Lieutenant General Dimitrios Vakentis, as well as honorary chiefs and active and retired officers and NCOs.
The Minister of National Defence pointed out in his address:
“Ladies and gentlemen,
I have repeatedly spoken to the Greek society of the “Agenda 2030”. An overall reform of the Armed Forces of our Country, regarding the weapon systems, the structure of Forces, the armaments systems of the future, the innovation.
However, there is a very important pillar in this Agenda: the third pillar, regarding the personnel of the Armed Forces. The main, greatest and necessary force multiplier. That is, the women and men constituting our personnel, the people who wear the honourable uniform of the member of our Armed Forces.
The improvement of the living conditions of these people is a great priority for the “Agenda 2030”.
Today we inaugurate three (3) new complexes here in Chaidari. But at the same time we do something broader: we completely modernise the services provided to this residential complex. We shape, that is, a whole support structure, by creating spaces for car wash, for petrol station. All these spaces which are necessary for the residential complex to be able to serve the needs of our members.
Of course, the daycare is necessary. The country faces the great challenge of decreased birth-rates. However, we cannot ask of the new military family to proceed, if we do not support it in this effort. This is what we will do.
Ladies and gentlemen,
We are not talking about a one-time intervention. As you know, the first phase concerns approximately 1,000 residencies. It is impressive how this extensive project, with funds approved by the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis some months ago, is proceeding and it will have been completed within the stipulated timetable, and also- I will repeat our ambition- after the first 1,000 residencies we hope to have 1,000 more built every year until 2030.
I believe the funds for this very important project will be provided for.
Our priority is always the nationally sensitive areas that are Thrace and the islands of Eastern Mediterranean.
I will not bore you with an endless series of numbers, but we will try and currently are trying to have a holistic approach in this matter. Not only construction of residencies, but also construction of spaces in which the military family and the neighbours can live and satisfy their needs.
I conclude by saying this: The military family, the family in general is the foundation of this society. All of us have to support it with our love and our concern.
Thank you”.
During the ceremony, three (3) new complexes were inaugurated, with thirty seven (37) apartments in total. In addition to those constructed or under construction, four more complexes have been sited, increasing the total number of the residential complex’s apartments to 172.
The residential complex at “KARAISKAKIS B” Camp occupies a stretch of 93 acres. It consists of 16 buildings in total, which have either been completed or are under construction, shaping, this way, a self-sufficient community.
Beyond those, five (5) existing buildings that ceased to operate as military facilities, have been remodelled or are currently being remodelled into apartments.
The complex has a number of service areas not solely addressed to the residents of the community: petrol station, car wash-lubrication, mall, cafeteria, playground and super market.
Beyond everything, the most important future planning concerns the construction of a daycare. In cooperation with the Melas Foundation, the required donation has been ensured in order for the daycare to begin being constructed in a few months, constituting an essential and at the same time emblematic provision for the families of the members residing in Western Attica.
The total of the constructions, either referring to new buildings or existing ones which have been remodelled into apartments, have characteristics that place them in energy class A, reducing energy consumption and minimising at the same time the environmental footprint of the residential complex.
