Alternate Defence Minister Dimitris Vitsas’ meeting with Georgios Tassas

December 29, 2016

The Alternate Minister of National Defence Dimitris Vitsas had a meeting on Thursday, December 29, 2016, in his office, with the last survivor of the legendary Destroyer ADRIAS, Georgios Tassas, who was then a seaman-engineer.

In World War II, during operations at the Dodecanese, Destroyer ADRIAS struck a mine near Kalymnos Island on October 22, 1943, and, as a result, her bow was destroyed. 21 persons were killed and 30 were injured. However, thanks to the heroic efforts of the crew, the remaining vessel managed to arrive in Alexandria, Egypt, on December 6, 1943.

Georgios Tassas was honoured recently at the premises of the Naval Training Command of the Hellenic Navy, Skaramagas, by the Alternate Minister of National Defence, during the inauguration of the Leakage Simulator and the naming ceremony of the Damage Control School after “Captain Konstantinos Arapis” who was the Chief Engineer of ADRIAS Destroyer.
