Following the initiatives, which have been assumed by the Ministry of National Defence in the framework of the policy for growth and modernization of the domestic defence industry, the Alternate Minister of National Defence Fofi Gennimata met with the Hellenic Aerospace and Defence Industry Groups (HASDIG) and the Hellenic Manufacturers of Defence Material Association (SEKPY) at the Ministry of National Defence today.
During the meeting:
The Ministry of National Defence expressed its satisfaction for the level of the domestic defence industry and its contribution to meet the operational requirements of the Armed Forces.
The HASDIG and SEKPY acknowledged the efforts of the Ministry to reinforce the capabilities and the competitiveness of the domestic defence industry and more specifically for:
a. The drafting, for the first time, of a National Defence Industry Strategy,
b. the legislative provision of 1% of the armaments programmes budget for defence Research and Development,
c. the drafting of a Single Defence Sector Entreprises Register
d. the promotion of the issue of certification of domestic defence industry products.
e. our participation with a national pavilion in major international expositions with the support of Enterprise Greece.
Proposals were made by both sides about the improvement and the most effective application of the current institutional framework for contract assignment in the field of defence. More specifically, the issues which will be examined are the following:
a. the terms of the contracts on supply and information security in the field of defence,
b. the institutional framework of the industrial cooperation for contracts which are exempted under the Law 3978/2011.
c. the funding of Research and Development
d. the reinforcement of medium-sized defence industries
The HASDIG and the SEKPY were informed about the main pivots of the National Defence Industry Strategy which is forwarded to the Hellenic Parliament to be discussed by the Special Standing Committee on Armament Programs and Contracts, so that it can be approved by the Committee on Armament Programs and Contracts afterwards.
The HASDIG and the SEKPY were asked to submit proposals on the improvement of the institutional framework of contract assignment in the field of defence setting the reinforcement of the Domestic Defence Industry Base as their criterion.
It was also confirmed that all sides are willing to continue their cooperation on a permanent and more effective basis in order to maintain and develop specific defence technology and industry capabilities.
