Following an initiative taken by the Alternate Minister of National Defence Fofi Gennimata a pending issue was settled about the legal protection of female professional soldiers who return to active service after a pregnancy leave.
Until now, female professional soldiers, until they completed 7 years of service, were appointed in units of frontier areas even after the pregnancy leave.
The amendment which was introduced to the bill of the Development and Competitiveness Ministry on “Settlement of supply issues” which was voted today by the Parliament, female professional soldiers who return to active service after a pregnancy leave and having completed a five years’ service, can serve in the unit of their choice for two years if operational requirements allow it.
In this manner, they obtain the same rights with the permanent personnel and their family life and the upbringing of their offspring at the first years of their age is facilitated.
