By decision of Defence Minister Panos Panagiotopoulos, Armed Forces’ personnel and means allocation for combating the fire at Mount Athos

By decision of the Minister of National Defence Mr. Panos Panagiotopoulos the Ministry of National Defence, fully responding to requests submitted by the apposite agents, allocated on August 11 2012 to the services of the General Secretariat of Civil Protection, to assist the combating of the fire at Mount Athos,land force, aerial means and materiel, as follows:

Aerial Means

  • 5 CL-415
  • 9 CL-215
  • 2 CH-47D Helo

Personnel (309 personnel)

  • 21 Officers and 268 Soldiers from the Hellenic Army General Staff
  • 20 Airmen from the Hellenic Air Force General Staff

Land Means

  • 40 Vessels of various types
  • 4 Bulldozers
  • 7 Water Wagons
  • 7 Land graders
  • 6 Tank Transporters

Moreover, all available forces in Central Macedonia are at standby and the Major Operational Formations’ Headquarters and Operation Centers within the area are activated in order to combat the fire at Mount Athos.

Finally, it should be noted that the Armed Forces are at constant readiness to allocate more forces and means, so as to contribute to the combating of fires, depending on the needs emerging and the requirements submitted by the apposite authorities.
