The Minister of National Defence Mr. Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos met today, 6 March 2020, with the Deputy Assistant at the U.S. Department of State – Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Mr. Matthew A. Palmer. At the meeting, also attended by the US Ambassador to Greece Jeoffrey Pyatt, further enhancement of the US-Greek cooperation in the defence field was discussed, based on the Mutual Defence Cooperation Agreement (MDCA).

The Minister of National Defence also briefed the US official on the mass and organized transfer of populations to our borders, under conditions of a true invasion, which is a destabilising action and a hybrid threat against our country, incited by Turkey.

He underlined the pressure borne by the islands in the Eastern Aegean Sea, due to the increasing non-Syrian immigrants flows from Turkey. Mr. Panagiotopoulos underlined Greece’s determination to defend its borders, which are also Europe’s borders.

At the talks, Greece’s essential contribution to promoting security and stability in the broader Balkan and Eastern Mediterranean region was confirmed.
