The Minister of National Defence Mr. Nikolaos Panagiotopoulos met today, Tuesday 21 February 2023, with the US Assistant Secretary of Defence for International Security Affairs Dr. Celeste Wallander, head of the US delegation at the 4th Greece-US Strategic Dialogue in the fields of Defence and Security.
The meeting was also attended by the Chief/HNDGS General Konstantinos Floros.
The strategic character of the Greece-US defence relation, as reflected in the upgraded MDCA, was underlined at the meeting. In particular, the geopolitical importance of Alexandroupolis for the provision and promotion of defence support to Ukraine was highlighted and, in this context, the priority to upgrade the (energy and transport) installations and infrastructure of the Port and broader region was emphasized.
At their discussions, both sides confirmed their will to further expand their cooperation in the field of defence, to achieve new defence capabilities through the US defence cooperation and financing programmes.
In addition, the developments in Ukraine, and the possibilities to provide defence support to the country for protection of its territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence, were discussed.
