Defence Minister Panos Kammenos at the celebration for the patron-Saint of the Land Army St George

April 23, 2015

The Minister of National Defence Panos Kammenos, accompanied by the Chief of the HNDGS General Michail Kostarakos, the Chief of the HAGS Lieutenant General Vassilios Tellidis and the Chief of the HAFGS Lieutenant General (AF) Christos Vaitsis, attended the celebration ceremony for the feast of St. George, patron saint of the Land Forces, which was held at the Infantry School, in Chalkida.

The Minister of National defence made the following statement:

“Today here, in the heart of the Hellenic Army, at the Infantry School, along with the leadership of the Armed Forces, we honour the patron Saint George the trophy-bearer. It is a great honour for us to be here, during difficult times, when the Nation is obliged, despite the financial problems, to support the Armed Forces.

The Greek people have faith in the Armed Forces. The Armed Forces are by the Greek people’s side, ready to defend the country’s territorial integrity and national independence, but also ready to provide, during peacetime, a feeling of security and a vast social contribution to Greek citizens.

I wish that Saint George will always be by the side of the Greek Army, our Infantry and our Armed Forces. The political leadership will do all that is necessary so as to ensure for the natural Military leadership, the Officers, NCOs, WOs, soldiers and National Guards, the possibility to have an Army who can affront modern threats as well. The geopolitical situation changes the world and Greece plays a crucial role. During such difficult times, the role of the Armed Forces becomes even more important.

As Minister of National Defence, on behalf of the Greek people, I would like to thank the personnel of the Armed Forces for fully responding to their duties, for their high spirit and for their readiness.”
