Defence Minister Panos Kammenos’ meeting with the Commissioner for Migration of the European Union Dimitris Avramopoulos

February 9, 2016

The Minister of National Defence Panos Kammenos met with the Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship of the European Union, Dimitris Avramopoulos, in Brussels, and informed him about the preparation of the five temporary residence centres and the two relocation centres which, as it was stressed, will be ready to operate on February 15, 2016.

Panos Kammenos informed the Commissioner that the existent identification system for refugees via Eurodac does not deal with the issue of identification as well as the issue of security effectively, and it must be combined with the system of biometric measurements.

Dimitris Avramopoulos informed the Minister of National Defence that the European institutions have already a positive attitude towards the effort made by the Greek government and expressed his willingness, as well as the Commission’s willingness, to help our country deal with the European refugee problem.

The Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship accepted the invitation extended by the Minister of National Defence to visit Greece over the next days.
