The Minister of National Defence Panos Kammenos met with MP of the New Democracy party in Rhodope region and former minister Evripidis Stylianidis.
They had a long discussion about issues regarding Thrace region. Mr. Stylianidis addressed a proposal-letter on Thrace in which he suggests a Training Centre to be created or transferred to Sapes, Rhodope. As mentioned in his letter, a Training Centre could:
- enhance the population in the area which faces a problem of abandonment,
- boost local economy,
- reinforce the sense of security for the residents of the area,
- improve the quality of the reservists’ training since they will be trained on the typical landscape of the borders.
The Minister of National Defence replied that he is concerned about Thrace and, in particular, about the demographic issue.
The Ministry of National Defence shares the opinion expressed in Mr. stylianidis’ proposal as part of the general reorganization of the structure of the Ministry of National Defence which has been assumed by the Deputy Minister of National Defence Nikos Toskas and they agreed that there will be another working meeting with the Deputy Minister of National Defence, as well as a meeting in Rhodope with the Minister of National Defence, the Mayor of Maroneia and Sapes and all competent authorities.
