Defence Minister Panos Kammenos’ statement following his speech at the AIPAC annual Conference

March 21, 2016

“In the context of the annual AIPAC Conference, one of the largest and most important Israeli organisations in the United States of America, the discussions held were important. I had the opportunity to communicate the excellent relations we now have at political, military and energy levels, as well as at the level of investments.

It is very important that Israeli organisations of the United States welcome this cooperation and will help Greece’s dynamic effort, coming out of the crisis, to move to the future, offering new investment opportunities, in an environment which will be safe, which will provide the conditions for the formation of an arc of security extending from Israel, through Cyprus, Egypt, Jordan, Greece to Bulgaria and Romania”.

QUESTION BY JOURNALIST: Would you like to comment on the migration issue, with respect to the EU-Turkey decision? How is the situation evolving? Do you think that it will evolve in the period ahead?

P. KAMMENOS: I am very pleased, as I see that NATO’s agreement is finally being accepted by Turkey; albeit signed, it had not been implemented and I believe that the renewed ratification of this treaty, in EU framework now as well, is very significant for Greece, as it essentially stops the voices initially heard, evoking fears for this agreement.

Let me remind you that EU members have signed in 2008 a treaty for immigration, where it is explicitly defined that Europe’s borders are Greece’s borders.

QUESTION BY JOURNALIST: As far as the economy is concerned, since we have a pause, due to the Catholic Easter, to the negotiations which are expected to resume on April 2, at which stage are we?

P. KAMMENOS: I would like to tell you that in the contacts I have had with the United States of America, it is finally clear that from the EU side, the assessment is at a very good level. As far as the IMF is concerned, I hope that there will be solutions which will be supported by the political side in the United States of America, so that the final decision for Greece to exit the memoranda will be taken before May 1st.
