The Minister of National Defence Mr. F. Fragkos shall visit tomorrow Sunday June 10 2012 the Prefecture of Evros, in order to attend the annual Memorial Service of the Lady of Marassia, Vassiliki Lambidou, at the village of Marassia.
The “Lady of Marassia” Vassiliki Lambidou – Fotaki passed away on June 19 2011 at the age of 107.
The woman-symbol of the Greek frontiersmen was born in 1904 at Megalo Zaloufi in Eastern Thrace. In 2007 she was awarded by the Academy of Athens for her perpetual service to army conscripts. Her house is located at 300 meters from the Turkish borders, at the natural borderline of Evros, the village of Marassia. She had experienced during her youth the population exchange of 1921 and she used to say that when she heard the guards of the other side, she always felt the need to declare her own presence and the Hellenic sovereignty of the region. For almost fifty years, she was raising the Greek flag every day at her house’s yard at Marassia, few hundreds of meters away from the Greek-Turkish frontier.
For her contribution to the country she had been honoured by the President of the Hellenic Republic, the Army and several other bodies.
