Deputy Defence Minister Alkiviadis Stefanis attends the signing of Contract for Financing the Construction of a Memorial to the Fallen at Kalpaki

The Deputy Minister of National Defence Alkiviadis Stefanis, attended today, Friday 30 July 2021, the signing ceremony of a contract between the Hellenic Parliament and the Municipality of Pogoni,
regarding the financing of the construction of a Memorial of the Fallen at the heroic battles of the Epic of 1940, at the village of Kalpaki.

The contract was signed by the President of the Hellenic Parliament Mr. KonstantinosTassoulas, and the Mayor of Pogoni, Mr. Konstantinos Kapsalis. The President of the Association of Relatives of the Fallen during the 1940 Epic, former Vice President of the Hellenic Parliament and Minister, Mr. Georgios Sourlas.

The Hellenic Parliament shall offer 600,000€ for the materialisation of the project, the study and realisation of which is assumed by the Municipality of Pogoni, in cooperation with the Ministry of National Defence. The erection of the Memorial is part of the wider block of the historical park to be constructed in Kalpaki, renovating and modernising the existing Military Museum, and spotlighting the fields where the battles of the Greco-Italian War were fought.

In his address, the Deputy Minister of National Defence stated that the Ministry of National Defence, cooperating with the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Tourism, signed a Memorandum of Cooperation , so as to promote Heritage Tourism.

“We wish to include visits by Greeks, but also visitors in Greece, which aim at paying tribute to battlefields and monuments, in the wider touristic product in our country. The park to be constructed in Kalpaki will be such a project”, he underlined.

As he also highlighted, “a comprehensive effort is made now, a park where the names of the 14,000 Officers and Soldiers will be included, as they are always considered an example and role model of heroism.
For the Armed Forces, they are a fine example, which revives our love for our country.”
