Deputy Defence Minister Nikolaos Chardalias attends the Funeral Service for Hero Charalambos Karagounis in Ancient Olympia

The Deputy Minister of National Defence Mr. Nikolaos Chardalias, attended the Funeral Service of Heroic Reservist Infantry Warrant Officer Charalambos Karagounis, on Sunday 12 December 2021, which was held at the Holy Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos, in his birthplace, Ancient Olympia.

Reservist Warrant Officer (Inf) Charalambos Karagounis was killed in action fighting for Faith and Fatherland in 1974, during the Turkish invasion in Cyprus. The transfer and the official reception ceremony of his relics was held on 25 November 2021, at Dekeleia Air Base, after the research and identification procedure was completed, as part of the exhumations project of the Research Committee for the Missing and of the respective project of the Republic of Cyprus.

The Funeral Service for Hero Charalambos Karagounis, at which His Grace the Metropolitan Bishop of Eleia and Oleni Germanos officiated, in an expression of honour and sympathy to his family, was attended by the MP of Eleia Constituency Mr. Michail Katrinis, the Mayor of Ancient Olympia Mr. Georgios Georgiopoulos, the Deputy Regional Governor for Sport, Voluntarism and Olympism of Western Greece Region Mr. Dimitrios Nikolakopoulos, the Commander of the Centre Command (DIKE – IV Inf Div “PELOPONNISOS”) Major General Leonidas Giovanis, as well as delegations of Armed Forces and Security Corps’ personnel.
