Today, Tuesday 15 December 2020, the Deputy Minister of National Defence Alkiviadis Stefanis, attended the oath taking ceremony of the Hellenic Army Academy 1st Class, named after “Captain (ENG) Sotirios Stavriannakos”, at the Academy Headquarters, in Vari Attica.
The oath taking ceremony was attended by HNDGS Chief General Konstantinos Floros and HAGS Chief Lieutenant General Charalambos Lalousis.
Due to the health conditions and the protection measures defined by the competent authorities the ceremony was live streamed via the Hellenic Army Academy webpage.
Here follows a brief Curriculum Vitae of Captain (ENG) Sotirios Stavriannakos, whose name was attributed to the Class of 2024:
He was born in Skoutari, Lakonia on the 31 of January 1941. He entered the Hellenic Army Military Academy on the 30th of September 1961 and graduated on the 27th of July 1965, having been commissioned an Engineers 2nd Lieutenant (ENG). He participated in the battle to defend the Hellenic Contingent in Cyprus, where he was heroically killed in action on the 16th of August in 1974, having first intercepted for three consecutive days nine Turkish attacks. With his courage and determination, he managed to spare the lives of other Greek fighters of the Hellenic Contingent Camp in Cyprus, saving them from certain death and captivity. His heroic effort rendered him a legend in the battle field.
