On Saturday 18 July 2020, the Deputy Minister of National Defence Alkiviadis Stefanis visited the island of Rhodes. Initially he travelled to the 395 National Guard Tank Battalion Headquarters where he attended the naming ceremony of its Command Post to “Lieutenant General Tzanidakis Ioannis”, who lost his life while on duty on April 19 2017, at the UH-1H Sarantaporo crash. In his address the Deputy Minister stated the following:
“…This solemn ceremony to name the 395 National Guard Tank Battalion Command post, a Unit which the General once was honoured to serve as its Commander, is the least honour we can render for the ethos and the services he offered to his Country throughout his military career. It is a diachronic given the fact that the history of all peoples constitutes the dominant factor of their national identity, a determining factor of its social cohesion and a launching pad for the realization of their objectives and ideals. Such astonishing events, as is the crash of the UH-1H in Sarantaporo, constitute the above-mentioned historical reference framework, within which the sacrifice of a person on duty occupies a dominant and glorious position…”
Then , the Deputy Minister of National Defence attended the ceremony in honour of the deceased Christos Zavorianos who was promoted to Reserve 1st Lieutenant (Armoured) . The insignia were presented to the sister of the 1st Lieutenant (Armoured) . In his address the Deputy Minister stated the following :
“I feel quite emotional attending today’s promotion ceremony of the dear friend Christos Zavorianos who may not be here with us today, still he remains alive in our memory and deep within our hearts since with his course and action he honored his birthplace and the Armed Forces. In very few cases do praising words simply describe the reality, and in even fewer cases words do not suffice to portray someone’s true contribution and exceptional ethos …”.
