On Monday, 24 November 2025, the Deputy Minister of National Defence Thanasis Davakis attended an event celebrating 180 years since the establishment of the Hellenic Naval Academy, which was held at the Academy’s grounds in Piraeus.
The Deputy Minister was welcomed by the Chief/HNGS, Vice Admiral Dimitrios-Eleftherios Kataras HN, representing the Chief/HNDGS, while the event was also attended by Archimandrite Theofilos Prousalidis, representing His Eminence the Metropolitan of Piraeus Serafeim, the Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Stefanos Gkikas, MPs Giorgos Vrettakos, Ioannis Tragakis, Dionysios Xatzidakis, Sofia-Chaido Asimakopoulou, the Mayor of Piraeus Giannis Moralis, the Mayor of Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni Grigoris Konstantellos, the Director of HAGS/FIN DTE, Major General Aristeidis Sgouroudis, representing the Chief/HAGS, the Commandant of the Hellenic Air Force Academy, Major General (HAF) Mattheos Kanoupakis, representing the Chief/HAFGS, the Chief of the Hellenic Coast Guard, Vice Admiral CG Tryphon Kontizas, and the Consul of the Republic of Senegal Georgios Pratikakis.
Upon conclusion of the event, Mr. Davakis stated:
“The Hellenic Naval Academy is not just an educational institution; it is a seedbed of values, tradition, and contribution. For 180 years, it serves with consistency its high mission: the development of officers for our Hellenic Navy who are capable, scientifically qualified, and devoted to the Country.
These officers will lead our Navy tomorrow, a modern, powerful Navy, capable of responding to any challenge of the new era. That is why the political leadership of the Ministry of National Defence promotes constant and targeted interventions, upgrading the assets, improving the infrastructure, and investing in the education and training of the personnel, ensuring that the Navy will remain a powerful deterrent force in the service of the Country.
I would like to congratulate the Academy’s Command and personnel for their multi-faceted work and assure them that the political leadership of the Ministry of National Defence will always support them”.
