The Hellenic Army General Staff prepared and issued for the first time a Field Manual on the tactical use of multicopter UAVs and methods to counter these in the modern battlefield.
It is stressed that, within the framework of the upgrade of enlisted soldier training by means of Law 5265/2026 of the Ministry of National Defence, which was recently passed by the Hellenic Parliament (“Roadmap for the Transition of the Armed Forces into the New Era”), enlisted soldiers will now also be trained on the use and countering of UAVs.
As stressed by the Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias, with the “Agenda 2030” reform, the Armed Forces turn from a set of weapon systems and personnel into a mechanism that invests in knowledge, training, and information processing and harnesses technological developments.
In particular, the Field Manual “Tactical Use of Multicopters and Countering Methods” is a comprehensive operational tool on the use of drones at the tactical level, Unit protection, and personnel training against a threat that now dominates the modern battlefield.
The Manual details the general principles of tactical employment of multicopters, as well as the practices to counter the threat they pose across the entire tactical echelon spectrum, from the Unit and Company down to the Platoon, Squad, and individual soldier level.
It also includes modern UAV employment tactics, procedures to counter enemy multicopters, personal protective equipment, as well as realistic training scenarios to prepare the personnel and Units.
Extensive national and NATO documentation was used for the preparation of the Manual, including a detailed study of recent operational lessons learned from high-intensity conflicts, mainly the war in Ukraine where the use of UAVs has decisively transformed the form of operations.
