Inclusion of Military Hospitals into the National Central Authority for Health Procurement

May 18, 2026

On Friday, 15 May 2026, the Plenary Session of the Hellenic Parliament passed the provisions of the Ministry of National Defence for the inclusion of Military Hospitals into the National Central Authority for Health Procurement.

This legislation came from the Working Group formed by order of the Deputy Minister of National Defence, Thanasis Davakis, in order to form a modern and effective procurement framework for Military Hospitals.

The inclusion of Military Hospitals into the National Central Authority for Health Procurement achieves:

  • The reduction of the pharmaceutical expenditure of Military Hospitals.

  • The reduction of the administrative costs related to medicine procurement procedures.

  • The harmonisation of the procurement procedures of Military Hospitals with those of Public Hospitals.

  • The faster payment of the relevant amounts.

This legislative initiative is part of a broader framework of reforms aimed at rationalising and upgrading the operation of the Military Healthcare System. It comes after a great effort made during the last two months of 2025 to repay arrears of Military Hospitals, which resulted in a 50% reduction.

In a statement after the passing of the law, the Deputy Minister of National Defence Thanasis Davakis stressed the following:

The inclusion of Military Hospitals into the National Central Authority for Health Procurement is an important institutional development that reduces operating costs and increases the transparency, effectiveness, and speed of procurement procedures.

Our goal is to continue to enhance our cooperation with the National Central Authority for Health Procurement in all areas, making use of the know-how and tools is develops.

I would like to wholeheartedly thank all Armed Forces personnel and service officials who participated in the Working Group and contributed to the preparation and completion of this important reform.”
