Joint Press Release of the Ministries of Justice and National Defence Ceremony for Signing Cooperation Agreement between the Ministries of Justice and National Defence

September 3, 2026

The Minister of Justice Giorgos Floridis, and the Deputy Minister of National Defence Thanasis Davakis, today, 2 September 2026, signed a Cooperation Agreement for the utilisation of non-operationally essential army camps for the establishment of court services. The Signing Ceremony was held in the “Ioannis Kapodistrias” Hall at the Ministry of National Defence.

The Minister of Justice Giorgos Floridis stated:

The signing of today’s Strategic Agreement marks the beginning of a new ambitious building project of the Ministry of Justice.

I believe that through the present Agreement we will have the opportunity to completely renovate premises and court facilities where Justice is administered in Greece, thus essentially contributing to the establishment of the rule of law in our Country.

We are fortunate that the circumstances and present political leadership of the Ministry of National Defence took account of our needs and requests and responded immediately. I believe the effort is ambitious and challenging, yet definitely feasible, and will have a deep impact”.

The Deputy Minister of National Defence, Thanasis Davakis, stated:

The signing of today’s Cooperation Agreement between the Ministry of National Defence and the Ministry of Justice, whose object is the exploitation of non-operationally essential army camps for the establishment of court services, marks an essential step towards the reinforcement of inter-ministerial cooperation and the rational management of public property.

Through this cooperation the available spaces and premises of the Ministry of National Defence are utilised and upgraded, in order to cover the Judiciary’s housing needs and create a modern, functional environment for this country’s judiciary authorities.

This initiative is based on the principle of common benefit.

On the one hand, the Judiciary gains the infrastructure it deserves, and on the other, the Ministry of National Defence receives the fair and reasonable compensation for granting its property, thus reinforcing the resources, which it receives back for the care of the personnel and the coverage of the needs of the Armed Forces.

Indicative and prime examples of this effort are the cases of the historical buildings of the former Hellenic Military Academy, where the Court of First Instance of Athens is housed, as well as the Army Camps “Zisimopoulou” in Nafplion and “Mandouvalou” in Gytheion – works of crucial importance, which showcase the value of this institutional synergy in action.

I would like to express my warmest thanks towards the competent services of the Ministry of National Defence, as well as the leadership and officials of the Ministry of Justice, for this essential contribution to the promotion and completion of this initiative.

Through such synergies, we create the conditions for steady progress and the utilisation of public resources, with a long-term benefit to the national economy, Justice and society”.
