Message by Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias for the National Anniversary of the 28th of October 1940

October 27, 2026

In a message for the National Anniversary of the 28th of October 1940, the Minister of National Defence stated the following:

“The 28th of October is not only an apex moment of our national history.

Today, we honour the Greeks who, in 1940, defended the freedom and independence of our country against the fascist and, later on, Nazi aggression.

During the parade, the progress of the reform of the Armed Forces up until today will be showcased.

The Greek people will witness the transition to the new era, the first examples of which we demonstrated last year in Thessaloniki. This course continues this year as well.

This development is part of the “Agenda 2030”, through which we are enhancing our deterrent capability and utilising new technologies along with the capabilities of our defence ecosystem.

On today’s occasion, I would like to express my pride for and gratitude towards the women and men of the Armed Forces and the civilian personnel of the Ministry of National Defence. Thanks to them, the Greek people and the Greek society are able to independently decide for the future of our Country.

Long live the 28th of October 1940!

Long live Greece!”.
